6 Rewarding Gifts From Spending Time Alone In Silence.

Can you stand spending time alone in absolute silence?

One of the hardest, yet most liberating ‘skill’ that I’ve learned in the last 10 years is to be alone in silence.

The first time I was in a cabin in Norway. My intention for the week was to distract myself as little as possible. No electronics, no books, no nothing. Just me, nature (walks) and the silence.

I thought I was going crazy.

The first 3 days where the most intense.

My thoughts were so loud, conflicting and out of control. I was overwhelmed with emotions, but at day 4, the mind started to give up on the exhausting fight. My mind slowed down. Light, clarity and a perfect sense of peace entered my mind, body and spirit. I had a sense of complete understanding, without knowing what I exactly understood.

The rest of the days where incredibly joyful, blissful even.

Start with a silence day or hour

I’ve repeated silence weeks a couple of times, but I discovered that silence weekends or silence days at home can be as effective (and less time consuming).

If you’ve never intentionally took the time to be in silence, I can highly recommend it. Even an hour or a morning will be a gift to yourself.

6 rewarding gifts silence allows for:

  1. Being alone allows for self reflection, leading to a better understanding of myself and my needs.

  2. It teaches me to accept and love myself more. All comparising thoughts, ideas about myself, judgement and self doubts fall away.

  3. Every time a greater sense of independence, self-reliance and self empowerment emerges. I feel in control of my mind, which leads to accurate thinking and feeling connected with everything.

  4. It improves the ability to connect and deal with difficult emotions in a healthy way.

  5. To be able to bounce back from any difficult situations and overcoming adversity is another gift. Resilience is gold.

  6. And the best gifts of all… learning to be my own best friend, feeling content in my own company.
